Gamma-ray burst: probe of a black hole

چکیده
There is strong evidence for the existence of black holes(BHs) in some X-ray binaries and most galatic nuclei, based on different measuremental approaches, but black holes aren’t finally identified for the lack of very firm observational evidence up to now. Because the direct evidence for BHs should come from determination of strong gravitational redshift, we hope an object can fall into the region near the BH horizon where radiation can be detected. Therefore the object must be compact stars as neutron stars(NSs), then the intense astrophysical processes will release very high energy radiation which is transient, fast-variant. These phenomena may point to gamma-ray bursts(GRBs) observed. And recent observations of iron lines suggest that afterglows of GRBs show the similar property in active galatic nuclei(AGNs), implying GRBs may originate from intense events related to black holes. In this letter, a model for GRBs and afterglows is proposed to obtain the range of gravitational redshifts(zg)of GRBs with known cosmological redshifts. Hence, we provide a new method that with a search for high-energy emission lines(Xor γ-rays) in GRBs, one can determine the gravitational redshift. We expect zg > 0.5 or even larger, so that we can rule out the possibility of other compact objects such as NSs, suggesting that the central progenitors of GRBs should be black holes.

Swift Pointing and the Association Between Gamma-Ray Bursts and Gravitational-Wave Bursts
The currently accepted model for gamma-ray burst phenomena involves the violent formation of a rapidly rotating solar mass black hole. Gravitational waves should be associated with the black-hole formation, and their detection would permit this model to be tested, the black hole progenitor (e.g., coalescing binary or collapsing stellar core) identified, and the origin of the gamma rays (within ...

متن کاملThe Blandford-Znajek Process as a Central Engine for a Gamma Ray Burst
We investigate the possibility that gamma-ray bursts are powered by a central engine consisting of a black hole with an external magnetic field anchored in a surrounding disk or torus. The energy source is then the rotation of the black hole, and it is extracted electromagnetically via a Poynting flux, a mechanism first proposed by Blandford and Znajek (1997) for AGN. Our reanalysis of the stre...

متن کاملThe Lowest-mass Stellar Black Holes: Catastrophic Death of Neutron Stars in Gamma-ray Bursts
Mergers of double neutron stars are considered the most likely progenitors for short gamma-ray bursts. Indeed such a merger can produce a black hole with a transient accreting torus of nuclear matter (Lee & Ramirez-Ruiz 2007, Oechslin & Janka 2006), and the conversion of a fraction of the torus mass-energy to radiation can power a gamma-ray burst (Nakar 2006). Using available binary pulsar obse...
متن کاملSpectral Lags of Gamma-Ray Bursts from Primordial Black Hole (PBH) Evaporations
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may have been created in the early Universe, are predicted to be detectable by their Hawking radiation. PBHs with an initial mass of ∼ 5×1014 g should be expiring today with a burst of high energy particles. Evaporating PBHs in the solar neighborhood are candidate Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) progenitors. We propose spectral lag, which is the temporal delay betwe...
